Marek Grechuta - Marek Grechuta & Anawa (1970)

Одна из недавних моих находок. Вообще для меня как для белоруса Польша в чем-то гораздо ближе России. В детстве я не мало времени проводил за просмотром польских телеканалов и прослушиванием польского радио. Не скажу что многое из того что я слышал мне понравилось. Польская рок-музыка для меня даже не вторична, а третична, как впрочем и российская. О белорусской и упоминать не стоит. Но вот что касается польской народной музыки, то она пришлась мне по душе. Собственно народную музыку вы и услышите на первом альбоме Марека Грехуты. Искренность с которой Марек читает/поет свои тексты и мастерство музыкантов просто завораживает.

Born in Zamość, he studied architecture at Cracow University of Technology. Here he met the composer Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz, with whom he founded the student cabaret Anawa in 1967. In the same year he was awarded second place in the VI National Contest of Student Musicians (VI Ogólnopolski Konkurs Piosenkarzy Studenckich) and also received an award for Tango Anawa, with lyrics by him and music by Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz. Since 1968 he would win several awards at the Festival of Polish Music in Opole. In 1969 he played a minor role in Andrzej Wajda's film Polowanie na muchy (Hunting Flies). In 1971 he left Anawa and founded the band WIEM (W Innej Epoce Muzycznej, In a Different Musical Epoch).
Grechuta scored a large number of popular hits, with his songs often characterized by use of poetic and literary elements. He co-authored, along with P. Birula and K. Szwajgier, the music for Exodus (written by L. A. Moczulski) at the STU Theatre in Kraków (1974), and co-wrote the musical adaptation of Stanisław Witkiewicz's Szalona lokomotywa (The Crazy Locomotive) with K. Jasiński and J. K. Pawluśkiewicz in 1977. In 2003 he collaborated with the group Myslovitz and re-recorded their older song Kraków. His song Dni, których nie znamy (The Days We Don't Know Yet) is the anthem of the football club Korona Kielce.
Marek Grechuta died in 2006 being outlived by his wife Danuta (whom he married in 1970) and son Łukasz. He is buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery in Kraków.

Hamilton Streetcar – Hamilton Streetcar (1969)

Унылый оркестрованный поп с фанковыми басовыми партиями и проговым вокалом. Неизвестно из каких соображений исходят буржуйские блогеры, называя это безобразие психоделией и даже поп-психоделией и выставляя этот стиль в тэгах. Ты скачиваешь и 40 минут недоумеваешь каким образом эта группа связана с The Tages например. Кстати раз уж заговорили о вокалисте, то следующий пост будет посвящен действительно сайк-поповому альбому Appletree Theatre, тоже, впрочем, весьма унылому.

In the wake of the personnel turmoil, 1969's "Hamilton Streetcar" found the survivors working with producer Richard Delvy. The impact on creativity was obvious. Whereas Plummer had previously written all of the band's material (he'd reportedly written some 50 tracks for their catalog), on the album his contributions were limited handling lead vocals and penning the pop-flavored 'Silver Wings'. That left the newly recruited Clifford to pick up the creative slack (rounded out by numerous cover tunes). Structurally the set was certainly odd, largely forsaking conventional three minute song structures in favor of a pair of side long, multi-part suites that frequently interweaved main themes with shorter refrains (examples included Clifford's 'Welcome into Your World' and a cover of Tim Buckley's 'Pleasant Street'). Heavily orchestrated tracks like their cover of Lee Michael's 'Streetcar', Boylan's 'Brother Speed' (which the original band line up actually included in their live repertoire) and 'I See I Am' featured an engaging mixture of lounge act, MOR pop, with occasional psych moves. The song quality bounced all over the place (Plummer himself has slammed the LP - see below), but several of the tracks were simply great - 'Wouldn't It Be Nice (To Have Wings and Fly)' and Plummer's 'Silver Wings' were personal favorites. Not a perfect comparison, but songs like 'Now I Taste the Tears' and the instrumental 'Entre Acte' sounded a bit like Curt Boetcher and Gary Usher's work with Sagittarius

Dion - Dion (1968)

Не буду пожалуй давать даже краткой выдержки из биографии исполнителя (при желании узнать о жизни и творчестве Диона Димуччи не сложно в любой рок-энциклопедии) и вообще остановлюсь на одной лишь песне с альбома, упомянутой уже в предыдущем посте

Песня Abraham, Martin and John была написана Диком Холлером и впервые исполнена Дионом в 1968-м году. Поводом к написанию послужили два трагических для Америки события - в апреле и июне того года были убиты Мартин Лютер Кинг и Роберт Кеннеди.
Кроме этих двоих в песне так же упоминаются Авраам Линкольн и Джон Кеннеди. Во всех куплетах повторяются одни и те же слова - меняется только имя. Приблизительно так:

Кто-нибудь здесь видел моего старого друга Мартина?
Не подскажете куда он пошел?
Он освободил много людей, но хорошие, кажется, умирают молодыми
Я лишь оглянулся, а его уже нет

В последнем куплете поется о Роберте Кеннеди, который умер последним. Автор видит его на холме, уходящего вместе с Авраамом, Мартином и Джоном.

Мне кажется эта песня лучше всего отражает дух всего альбома.

Стоит так же упомянуть курьезную версию знаменитой Purple Haze Хендрикса, которую Дион превратил в барокко поп с вокализом. ИМХО, звучит в разы лучше оригинала.

Featuring his Top Five comeback single "Abraham, Martin and John," this folk-rock and blues-flavored effort remains his most fully realized album. In addition to the impressive anti-war original "He Looks a Lot Like Me," it contains mature interpretations, arranged both acoustically and with strings, of songs by Fred Neil, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Lightnin' Hopkins (though the florid version of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" is embarrassing). The CD reissue adds the highly sought-after non-LP B-side "Daddy Rollin'," a Dion original that ranks as his most country-blues-influenced performance.

Bergen White - For Women Only (1969)

Берген Уайт был членом группы Ronny & the Daytonas в последние горячие их деньки, когда парни отступили от своего про-Бич Бойз стиля и разрабатывали его более легкую версию, к чему их подвигнул некоторый успех сингла "Sandy" (софт баллада с бэками а-ля 50-е.) В 1969 году, когда группа окончательно развалилась, Уайт записал свой первый альбом For Women Only, который был издан на лейбле SSS-International. Берген написал сам, и в соавторстве с Бобом Тьюбертом, несколько песен, однако основная часть софт-поповых хитов пластинки сочинена другими композиторами.

Очень неплохой поп/барокко-поп. Если бы исполнитель был чуть более эмоционален было бы похоже на Neon Philharmonic. Я признаться особо и не расслушал его и вообще как-то прохладно отнесся, но сейчас вот слушаю и альбом мне нравится все больше и больше :)

"Bergen White was a member of Ronny & the Daytonas during the Nashville-based hot rod group`s last days, when the band was shifting away from Beach Boys-styled hot rod and surf tunes and developing its "softer" side after finding some success with a ballad hit, "Sandy." In 1969, when the group finally did break up, White remained in the Nashville area, where he recorded his first album, For Women Only, which was released on producer and mini-mogul Shelby Singleton`s SSS-International label. White wrote or co-wrote several of the tracks himself ("Now" was co-written with Bob Tubert, who wrote several hits for Eddy Arnold, Sonny James, Roy Clark, and others), but many of the highlights are his soft pop renditions of material penned by other notable composers." ~AMG
