The E-Types - Introducing ...The E-Types (1965-1966)

Если бы меня спросили какой бэнд лучше всего исполняет каверы хитов 60-х, я не задумываясь назвал бы E-Types. На этой пластинке собрано все творческое наследие этой талантливой группы из штата Калифорния - четыре собственных сингла и best covers I ever heard.

Приятного прослушивания. Надеюсь в последнем году будем встречаться чаще.

In the mid-'60s, this group from Salinas, CA, (near San Jose) played a pleasant blend of British Invasion-inspired pop/rock and a touch of garage. With prominent keyboards, three-part harmonies, and original material with minor-keyed shifts, they sounded something like a mix between the Zombies and the Turtles. Very popular within their (pretty limited) stomping grounds, they made no impact whatsoever on a national level, issuing four singles on small labels (most of them with producer Ed Cobb, who also handled the Standells and the Chocolate Watch Band). Certainly they were a promising outfit, capable of offering strong original material (most of which, oddly, was penned by a friend who wasn't in the band, Larry Hosford). They didn't have enough time to convert that promise into truly significant work, however. They disbanded in 1967, when their carefully executed pop/rock was falling out of fashion in California, in favor of psychedelia.

Utopia - Deface The Music (1980)

Просто забежал сказать, что я еще жив, а следовательно: бэдлинки будут пофикшены (не позднее наступления конца света), удаленные по абузе посты восстанут из пепла аки птицы Фениксы, новые музыки прольются на ваши уши из рога сусличного изобилия, а Веничка доедет таки до Петушков..

И не смотря на то, что последнее, явно утопическое, утверждение дает повод усомниться в справедливости предшествующих ему, вполне реальных, анонсов.. оно так же позволяет включить ассоциативный ряд и плавно перейти к описанию альбома группы Utopia.

На Прогархивах, завсегдатаи с недоумением и гадливостью оплевали Deface The Music, найдя, что единственное достоинство альбома заключается в том, что он короткий.

"Что же ты такое учудил, Тодд?" - вопрошали Рандгрена уберфаны и продюсеры фильма Roadie, саундтреком к которому должна была стать эта злополучная пластинка.

Их недоумение разделила вся Европа. А бабушка моя, глухонемая, с печи мне говорит: «Вот видишь, как далеко зашла ты, Дашенька, в поисках своего "я"!»

В общем-то история умалчивает о том, какими соображениями руководствовался Тодд Рандгрен в те былинные времена, а только записал он в год от РХ 1980-й не то что бы про-Битловский альбом, но зеркальную копию основного наследия великолепной четверки. Вполне можно понять, устрашившихся алчного Макки, продюсеров, отказавшихся в итоге использовать записанный материал в своем фильме - родственное сходство отдельных треков с битловскими хитами несомненно. Но понять брезгливых прогеров никак нельзя - это же замечательный альбом!

К слову говоря, Deface The Music - это один из тех альбомов, с которых началось мое знакомство с многогранным миром про-сикстиз музыки в частности и 60-ми в целом.

И сейчас, с вершин достигнутого дна, я хочу воспользоваться случаем, что бы поблагодарить тех людей, благодаря которым я вляпался по уши в 60-е и, как следствие, в сайк-, барокко- и прочие "попы"..

Deface the Music is a 1980 album by the band Utopia featuring Todd Rundgren, Roger Powell, Kasim Sulton, and Willie Wilcox. The concept of the album was to pay homage to The Beatles and create songs which sounded very similar to the Fab Four's tunes throughout the various stages of their career. The first track, "I Just Want to Touch You", was written by Rundgren for the movie Roadie soundtrack. It was rejected by the producers for fear of legal action because it sounded so much like the Beatles.

Andy Kim - Rainbow Ride (1969)

Andrew Youakim, performing as Andy Kim, is a Lebanese Canadian pop rock singer and songwriter. He grew up in Montreal, Quebec in Canada. Kim is known for a number of hit singles that he released in the late 1960s and early 1970s such as "Rock Me Gently", which topped the U.S. singles charts. In 1968, he co-wrote "Sugar, Sugar" for The Archies. The song was No. 1 for four weeks and in 1969 was certified "Record of the Year" by the RIAA.
Kim has also recorded under the stage name Baron Longfellow since the mid 1980s

Hamilton Streetcar – Hamilton Streetcar (1969)

Унылый оркестрованный поп с фанковыми басовыми партиями и проговым вокалом. Неизвестно из каких соображений исходят буржуйские блогеры, называя это безобразие психоделией и даже поп-психоделией и выставляя этот стиль в тэгах. Ты скачиваешь и 40 минут недоумеваешь каким образом эта группа связана с The Tages например. Кстати раз уж заговорили о вокалисте, то следующий пост будет посвящен действительно сайк-поповому альбому Appletree Theatre, тоже, впрочем, весьма унылому.

In the wake of the personnel turmoil, 1969's "Hamilton Streetcar" found the survivors working with producer Richard Delvy. The impact on creativity was obvious. Whereas Plummer had previously written all of the band's material (he'd reportedly written some 50 tracks for their catalog), on the album his contributions were limited handling lead vocals and penning the pop-flavored 'Silver Wings'. That left the newly recruited Clifford to pick up the creative slack (rounded out by numerous cover tunes). Structurally the set was certainly odd, largely forsaking conventional three minute song structures in favor of a pair of side long, multi-part suites that frequently interweaved main themes with shorter refrains (examples included Clifford's 'Welcome into Your World' and a cover of Tim Buckley's 'Pleasant Street'). Heavily orchestrated tracks like their cover of Lee Michael's 'Streetcar', Boylan's 'Brother Speed' (which the original band line up actually included in their live repertoire) and 'I See I Am' featured an engaging mixture of lounge act, MOR pop, with occasional psych moves. The song quality bounced all over the place (Plummer himself has slammed the LP - see below), but several of the tracks were simply great - 'Wouldn't It Be Nice (To Have Wings and Fly)' and Plummer's 'Silver Wings' were personal favorites. Not a perfect comparison, but songs like 'Now I Taste the Tears' and the instrumental 'Entre Acte' sounded a bit like Curt Boetcher and Gary Usher's work with Sagittarius

The Move - The Move (1968)

Классический сайк-поповый альбом, который я послушал полностью довольно поздно, по случаю. Кажется Илья Морозов выкладывал его в своем журнале. Найти и почитать сего психо-подвижника несложно - вбиваете в поисковик кодовые слова "илья морозов the move" и идете по первой же ссылке.

Move is the eponymous debut album by The Move, released on the Regal Zonophone label. The only one which was recorded by the group’s initial line-up before bassist Ace Kefford left, it includes both sides of their third and fourth singles ('Flowers In The Rain' and 'Fire Brigade'). The last track, 'Cherry Blossom Clinic', was intended as a single at the end of 1967, and an acetate, with 'Vote For Me' (a song which remained unreleased until 1997), was pressed. Release was cancelled, as the lyrics were about the inmate of a mental home, and in the wake of the controversy which had dogged 'Flowers In The Rain', with its promotional postcard featuring an allegedly libellous drawing of Prime Minister Harold Wilson, it was felt that to risk further allegations of bad taste and scandal would harm their career irreparably.
The remainder of the album consisted of Roy Wood originals, and three cover versions that had featured prominently in their live set. 'Weekend' was an Eddie Cochran song, and 'Hey Grandma' had originally been recorded by US psychedelic band Moby Grape. 'Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart' was an old James F. Hanley standard, with an arrangement copied from The Coasters. It was their only album to chart, reaching No. 15.

Turtles - It Ain't Me Baby (1965)

Группа Turtles. Просто чудесная, и на этот раз действительно чудесная, и никаких пафосных стандартных оборотов, группа. По моему скромному мнению эти ребята могли бы быть и более популярны, ибо достоинствами обладали многими. Однако же что-то не сработало. Впрочем и сказать что они не были популярны было бы неверно, всё таки свою дольку этой блестящей, эфемерной игрушки они ухватили. Первый альбом этой группы от первой и до последней песни мелодично-битовый.

Особо отмечу два кавера на любимейшие мои песни: "It Was A Very Good Year" и "We'll Meet Again". Кстати We'll Meet Again в их исполнении вполне может посоперничать с версией непревзойдённой Веры Линн.
